For the past 10 years, Sharon C. McGee has been the primary caregiver for her 68-year-old husband Arthur who has Frontotemporal Dementia. Arthur currently resides in the memory care unit of an assisted living center. Sharon has also provided assistance and care to her mother who had Parkinson’s with Lewy Bodies Dementia. She’s a professor at Southern University at New Orleans in its Health Information Management Systems program and consults with hospitals and physician practices in medical coding, billing, and compliance. She serves as a Community Educator for the Alzheimer’s Association and frequently speaks on topics related to Alzheimer’s, dementia, and caregiving. Sharon talks with Gary about the sea of quagmire that issues of insurance, healthcare, and illness feels like even for someone familiar with the medical field as Sharon is. More importantly, they’ll discuss how to be an advocate for your loved one and for yourself in addition to issues pertinent to the caring of a loved one in a healthcare facility such as communicating with providers, coordinating care, and recommended legal documents.
